AI User InterviewsUse case

Churn interviews that actually get answered.

Everyone agrees they should interview churned customers. Almost nobody does, because people who just cancelled do not book calls. An AI-moderated churn interview fits in the gap: one link, five minutes, in their own words.

Why churn interviews do not happen

The cancellation survey gets a dropdown answer ("too expensive") that explains nothing. The follow-up email asking for a 30-minute call gets ignored, because the relationship is over and the customer has moved on. The result is that most teams know their churn rate precisely and the reasons for it hardly at all.

Scheduling is the real barrier. Remove it and response rates change character: a churned customer will often spend five minutes typing an honest answer the same day, especially if asked well and offered a small thank-you.

How an AI-moderated churn interview works

    • Create a churn project with five or six open questions and tell the interviewer the goal: understand the moment the product stopped being worth it.
    • Put the interview link in your cancellation confirmation screen and the cancellation email. Optionally add a screening question to separate voluntary churn from, say, company shutdowns.
    • The customer opens the link, reads a short intro and consent note, and chats with the interviewer for five to ten minutes. The interviewer probes vague answers ("too expensive compared to what?") and moves on when an answer is complete.
    • You get an email when each interview completes. Themes, sentiment by topic, and quotes accumulate across every churned customer who responds.

A churn interview guide you can copy

Adjust the wording to your product. Keep it to six questions; churned customers are doing you a favour.

    • What were you hoping [product] would help you do when you first signed up?
    • Tell me about the point where you started thinking about cancelling. What was happening?
    • What did you try before deciding to leave?
    • What are you using instead now, and how is it different?
    • If one thing had been different, would you have stayed? What was it?
    • Is there anything you would want the team to know?

    Reading the results

Resist summarising after three interviews. Let fifteen or twenty land, then read the themes with their quotes attached. Compare segments: did people on the Free plan leave for the same reasons as paying customers? Did churn in the first week look different from churn after six months? Sentiment by topic will show you where the frustration concentrates; drop-off by question will show you if the guide is too long.

Then take the quotes, not the summary, into the roadmap conversation. A sentence from a real former customer changes a prioritisation meeting in a way a percentage never does.

    Incentives and etiquette

Offer something modest and immediate: a gift card, a refund of the last month, a donation. Say up front it will take five minutes and that an AI will ask the questions. Thank them at the end, and do not pitch them to come back inside the interview. The research is the point.
