AI User InterviewsGuide

    AI interviews vs. surveys.

Surveys are cheap, scalable, and quantifiable. They are also where "other (please specify)" goes to die. AI-moderated interviews cost about the same to run and give you the conversation instead. Here is how to choose, and why the answer is often both.

    What each is good at

A survey asks the same fixed questions of everyone, so answers can be counted. It is the right tool when you already know the possible answers and need to know their distribution: how satisfied, how often, which of these five.

An AI interview asks open questions and follows up on each answer, so it surfaces things you did not know to ask about. It is the right tool when you need the reasons, the story, and the words people actually use.

    Where surveys fall short

    • Open text boxes get one-line answers because there is nobody to ask "what do you mean by that?".
    • Fixed options encode your assumptions. If the real reason is not on the list, you will never see it.
    • Long surveys are abandoned; short surveys are shallow. There is no way to go deep only where it matters.
    • The output is a chart, which is persuasive but does not tell you what to build.

    Where AI interviews fall short

    • Samples are smaller. Twenty rich transcripts tell you which themes exist, not how prevalent each is across 10,000 customers.
    • Analysis is interpretive. Good tools make it traceable (every theme cites its quotes), but it is still judgement, not arithmetic.
    • They take a participant 10 to 15 minutes rather than two. Incentives and a clear ask matter more.

Use both, in the right order

The most effective pattern is interview first, survey second. Run 15 to 25 AI interviews to discover the themes and the language. Write the survey's answer options from those themes, in participants' own words. Field the survey to measure prevalence. Then, when a survey number surprises you, send that segment an interview link to find out why.

The reverse also works for an existing survey: add one line to the thank-you page offering a five-minute follow-up conversation, and route it to an AI interviewer.

    Cost and effort

Both are cheap to run at the tool level; the cost is in participant time and incentives. AI User Interviews pricing is published (Free plan with 5 active projects and 100 participants a month; Pro is $25 a month), and there is no per-response fee from us, so running interviews alongside your survey tool does not require a new budget line.
